Launch week is when more people and more crawlers visit your site than at any time before. Every launch post, directory listing and social share points at your pages at once. If those pages are blocked from search, have the wrong title, or show a blank card when shared, you lose the attention you worked for. Some of it you will not get back.

This checklist covers the SEO work to finish before launch day, grouped so you can split it across a team or a few evenings. Each check names a free tool that does it. None of it needs an agency. Most of it takes an afternoon on a small site.

## How to use this checklist

- **Run it on the live production site**, not on staging. Most launch-day SEO bugs come from settings that differ between the two.
- **Start with the pages that matter:** the homepage, pricing, the main feature or use-case pages, and the page your launch posts link to.
- **Fix in order.** A page that cannot be indexed gains nothing from a better title, so crawling comes first.

## 1. Crawling and indexing

Can search engines reach and keep your pages? This section prevents the most expensive mistakes.

- **robots.txt allows crawling.** No `Disallow: /` left over from development. Test key URLs with the [robots.txt tester](https://abacklaunch.com/tools/robots-txt-tester).
- **robots.txt lists your sitemap** with a full URL: `Sitemap: https://yoursite.com/sitemap.xml`.
- **No stray noindex.** Check the live source and headers of each key page for `noindex`. The [meta tag checker](https://abacklaunch.com/tools/meta-checker) shows the robots tag.
- **A clean XML sitemap.** Only canonical URLs that return 200. No redirects, 404s or staging URLs. Check it with the [sitemap checker](https://abacklaunch.com/tools/sitemap-checker).
- **One version of the domain.** `http`, `https`, `www` and bare domain all redirect with a single 301 to the one you chose. Test each with the [redirect checker](https://abacklaunch.com/tools/redirect-checker).
- **Self-referencing canonicals** on every page, on the production domain. The [canonical URL checker](https://abacklaunch.com/tools/canonical-url-checker) shows what each page declares.
- **A real 404 page** that returns a 404 status, not a 200 with "not found" text.
- **Staging is hidden.** Your staging or preview site is password protected or noindexed, so it never competes with production.
- **Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools** are verified, and the sitemap is submitted to both.
- **Key pages requested for indexing** through URL Inspection in Search Console.

## 2. Titles, descriptions and headings

These decide what people see in search results, and whether they click.

- **A unique title on every page**, around 50 to 60 characters, with the main topic first and the brand last. "Invoice software for freelancers | Acme" says more than "Home | Acme".
- **A unique meta description on every page**, around 140 to 160 characters, that says what the page offers and who it is for. Google may rewrite it, but a good one is used more often.
- **One H1 per page** that matches the title's topic. The [heading checker](https://abacklaunch.com/tools/heading-checker) shows the outline and flags missing or duplicate H1s.
- **Headings in order**, H2 then H3, describing what each section actually covers.
- **The homepage says what the product is** in plain words, in the HTML, not only inside an image or animation.
- **Words people search for.** If customers say "invoice template" and your page says "billing artefact generator", use their words.

The [meta tag checker](https://abacklaunch.com/tools/meta-checker) checks the length of any page's title and description and previews the search result. The [search result preview](https://abacklaunch.com/tools/serp-preview) lets you test rewrites before you ship them.

## 3. Page content

- **Enough text to understand the page.** A feature page needs more than a headline and a button: what it does, who it is for, how it works, common questions.
- **No near-duplicate pages.** Ten use-case pages that differ by one word are treated as one. Merge them or make each genuinely different.
- **Descriptive alt text** on meaningful images. The [image alt checker](https://abacklaunch.com/tools/image-alt-checker) lists the ones missing it.
- **Internal links** from the homepage to every important page, with descriptive link text, not "click here".
- **Clean URLs.** Short, lowercase, words separated by hyphens: `/pricing`, `/features/invoice-reminders`. The [slug generator](https://abacklaunch.com/tools/slug-generator) helps for new pages.
- **No broken links.** Run the [broken link checker](https://abacklaunch.com/tools/broken-link-checker) on the homepage and main pages.

Run each key page through the [on-page SEO checker](https://abacklaunch.com/tools/seo-checker). It audits the title, description, headings, images, links, word count and schema in one pass, with a score and a list of fixes.

## 4. Structured data

[Structured data](https://abacklaunch.com/glossary/schema-markup) is JSON-LD code that tells search engines exactly what a page describes: an organization, a software product, an article. It can make pages eligible for richer results, and it helps AI assistants read the facts correctly.

- **Organization** on the homepage: name, URL, logo and your official profiles in `sameAs`.
- **WebSite** on the homepage, with the site name you want Google to show.
- **SoftwareApplication** or **Product** on the product page, with the category, operating system and price where they apply.
- **Article** or **BlogPosting** on blog posts, with the author and dates.
- **BreadcrumbList** on deeper pages, so results show the path instead of a long URL.
- **Only mark up what is on the page.** Ratings you do not show, or reviews you wrote yourself, break Google's guidelines.

Check every page with the [schema markup checker](https://abacklaunch.com/tools/schema-markup-checker). It finds the JSON-LD and microdata on a page, lists each type and its fields, and flags invalid JSON and missing required fields. One note on FAQ markup: Google now shows FAQ rich results only for a small set of well-known government and health sites. FAQ schema will not give a startup site the expanded result it once did. It can still help other systems read the questions.

## 5. Link previews

On launch day, most people meet your site as a shared link on X, LinkedIn, Slack or Discord, not as a search result. The preview card is controlled by [Open Graph](https://abacklaunch.com/glossary/open-graph) tags.

- **og:title and og:description** on every page you will share, written for a feed rather than for search.
- **og:image at 1200 x 630 pixels**, with a short headline readable on a phone. Check the file with the [Open Graph image size checker](https://abacklaunch.com/tools/og-image-size-checker).
- **twitter:card set to summary_large_image** so X shows the large image.
- **An absolute image URL** that loads without a login or a redirect to another domain.

Paste each launch URL into the [social preview checker](https://abacklaunch.com/tools/og-checker) to see the card X, LinkedIn, Slack and Facebook will show, and fix missing tags before anyone shares the link. If you change an image after sharing, some networks keep the old card for a while, so get it right first.

## 6. Speed and mobile

- **The page works on a phone.** Most launch traffic from social and communities is mobile.
- **Fast server response** under launch load. If you expect a spike, cache the marketing pages.
- **Compressed, correctly sized images.** A 4 MB hero image is the most common cause of a slow launch page.
- **No render-blocking scripts** you do not need on the landing page: chat widgets and heavy trackers can load later.

The [page speed checker](https://abacklaunch.com/tools/page-speed-checker) measures response time, page weight, compression, caching and render-blocking files, with tips for [Core Web Vitals](https://abacklaunch.com/glossary/core-web-vitals).

## 7. AI assistants

More people now ask ChatGPT, Claude or Perplexity which tool to use. A few checks make your site readable to them:

- **Allow the AI search crawlers** you want, such as OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot, in robots.txt.
- **Server-render the main content**, because many AI crawlers do not run JavaScript.
- **State the key facts in plain sentences:** what it is, who it is for, what it costs.

The [GEO checker](https://abacklaunch.com/tools/geo-checker) tests all of this in one pass. Our guide on [how to get cited by ChatGPT and Perplexity](https://abacklaunch.com/blog/how-to-get-cited-by-chatgpt-and-perplexity) goes deeper.

## 8. Measurement

- **Analytics installed and tested** on every page, including the sign-up flow.
- **A conversion event** for the one action that matters: sign-up, trial start, or the first key action.
- **UTM links** for every launch post, built with the [UTM builder](https://abacklaunch.com/tools/utm-builder), so search traffic is not mixed up with launch traffic.
- **Search Console linked** to your analytics if your tool supports it.
- **A baseline noted down:** indexed pages, impressions and referring domains on launch day, so you can see change later.

## Launch-day SEO bugs to catch

These are the mistakes that turn up again and again on launch sites. Check each one on the live site the day before.

- A noindex tag left on from the staging build.
- Canonical tags pointing at the staging domain or at localhost.
- The sitemap listing staging URLs, or still empty.
- The same title on every page, usually just the brand name.
- An Open Graph image that is a relative URL, so previews show no image.
- A redirect chain from `http` to `www` to `https` to the final URL.
- A new pricing or feature page that is not linked from anywhere.
- Analytics firing twice, which doubles every number you will read next week.

## After launch

- **Week 1:** check the Pages report in Search Console for unexpected exclusions, and fix them.
- **Week 2:** confirm which launch listings went live and whether each link is followed, with the [nofollow checker](https://abacklaunch.com/tools/nofollow-checker).
- **Month 1:** read the queries report. Rewrite titles to match the searches you already appear for.
- **Every month after:** publish pages aimed at narrow searches, and keep earning links. Our guide on [how long SEO takes](https://abacklaunch.com/blog/how-long-does-seo-take) sets expectations.

The rest of the launch, from positioning to the follow-up emails, is in the [startup launch checklist](https://abacklaunch.com/blog/startup-launch-checklist-first-time-founders).

## FAQ

### What SEO should I do before launching a startup?

Make sure every key page can be crawled and indexed, and give each a unique title and description. Add structured data, check link previews and test speed on mobile. Set up Search Console and analytics. Do it on the live site, not staging.

### What is the most common SEO mistake at launch?

A noindex tag or a robots.txt block left over from staging. It keeps the whole site out of search, and it is easy to miss because the site looks fine in a browser.

### Do I need structured data on a startup website?

It is not required, but it helps search engines and AI assistants read your pages correctly. Organization and WebSite markup on the homepage, and SoftwareApplication or Product markup on the product page, are a good start.

### How long should a page title be?

About 50 to 60 characters. Longer titles are usually cut off in search results. Put the main topic first and the brand name last.
