Why it matters after a launch
A launch brings sign-ups; activation tells you whether they got anything from the product. A thousand sign-ups with a 5% activation rate means 50 people experienced the product. Raising activation is often the fastest way to grow after launch, because it works on traffic you already have.
Defining the moment
Pick one action that means a new user got value: the first invoice sent, the first chart with real data, the first successful API call. Measure the share of sign-ups who do it within a day or a week. A vague definition, such as "logged in twice", hides problems.
Improving it
Remove steps before the first value: fewer sign-up fields, no card for a trial, sample data in empty screens. Watch a few new users try the product and fix where they stall. Read activation by traffic source, using tagged links, because different launch audiences behave very differently.
Activation and retention
Activation is the first step; retention is whether people come back. A product can have high activation and still lose users after a week if the first result does not lead to a habit. Track both, by source: day 1 and day 7 return rates show whether the activated users found lasting value.
Example
An invoicing tool defines activation as sending a first invoice within 24 hours. After adding a sample invoice to the empty dashboard, activation rises from 18% to 31%.
Questions people ask
- What is a good activation rate?
- It depends on the product and how activation is defined. Compare your own rate across sources and over time rather than with other companies' numbers.
- How do I measure activation?
- Record the first-value action as an event in your analytics, then divide the number of new users who did it within the time window by the number who signed up.
