Voting ring

Also called vote ring, vote manipulation or upvote ring.

A voting ring is a group of people or accounts coordinated to upvote the same post or launch, which ranking platforms treat as manipulation and penalize.

How platforms respond

Hacker News, Reddit and Product Hunt all look for coordinated voting: many votes from accounts that rarely vote, votes that arrive from the same link, or accounts linked to each other. Detected votes can be discounted, the post pushed down or removed, and repeat offenders banned.

What counts

Sharing your launch with your audience is normal. Asking people to upvote it, especially with a direct link and a request to vote, crosses the line on most platforms. Buying votes or using groups that trade upvotes always does.

Even when it is not detected, a ranking built on votes from people who do not use the product brings visitors who are not interested.

What to ask for instead

Ask people to try the product and leave honest feedback. Comments from real users help a launch more than votes, and they are what platforms want to see.

Why it backfires

Votes from people who do not care about the product bring a ranking without users. The visitors a high position brings judge the product on its own merits, and a launch that rose on borrowed votes often converts worse than a lower one with real interest. If a platform detects it, the launch, and sometimes the account, is penalized.

Example

A launch gets fifty votes in ten minutes from accounts created that week, all arriving from one group chat; the platform discounts them and the launch drops off the front page.

Questions people ask

Can I ask friends to upvote my launch?
You should not. Tell them about it and ask for feedback; platforms penalize coordinated voting, and they are good at spotting it.
Is sharing my launch on social media a voting ring?
No. Telling your audience about a launch is normal. Asking people to upvote, or coordinating votes in a group, is what platforms penalize.
