What a Show HN needs
A Show HN is for something people can try: a product, a project, a library. The title starts with "Show HN: " and fits in 80 characters, which leaves 71 for the name and what it does. The link goes to the demo or the repository, and the maker posts a first comment straight away.
Hacker News readers respond to specifics and plain language: the stack, open source, self-hosted, what was hard. They react badly to hype words, exclamation marks and anything that reads like marketing.
The first comment
Say hello and who you are, why you built it, how it works technically, what it does not do yet, and what feedback you want. The generator writes the frame; the technical part has to come from you, and it is the part readers care about most. Our guide to writing a Show HN post walks through each part with an example.
Questions
How long can a Show HN title be?
80 characters, including the "Show HN: " prefix.
Can I post a landing page as a Show HN?
No. Show HN is for things people can try; waitlists, newsletters and blog posts do not qualify.
Should I ask people to upvote my Show HN?
No. Hacker News penalizes posts that get votes from people sent to them. Share it, and ask for feedback instead.
Is anything I type sent anywhere?
No. The post is written in your browser and nothing is uploaded.
