What it changes
For many informational queries, the searcher gets the answer without clicking. Pages that rank well can see fewer clicks, while pages cited as sources inside the overview can gain visibility. Queries where people want to do something, such as use a tool or compare products, are less affected.
Getting cited
Overviews draw on pages that already rank and that state facts clearly. A short, direct answer near the top of the page, clear headings that match questions, accurate data and structured markup all make a page easier to quote. The same habits help with other AI assistants.
What to build
Pages that do something an overview cannot: tools, checkers, comparison tables built from checked data, and original numbers. These keep earning clicks, and other pages cite them. A summary can state a limit; it cannot check your text against it.
Measuring the effect
Search Console does not separate clicks from AI Overviews. Watch for queries where impressions hold steady but clicks fall, which often means the answer is now given on the results page. Those pages may need something an overview cannot replace: a tool, data or a deeper comparison.
Example
A search for "product hunt tagline length" shows an AI Overview stating the 60 character limit, citing the pages that state it clearly at the top.
Questions people ask
- Can I opt out of AI Overviews?
- Google's snippet controls, such as nosnippet, limit what can be shown, but they also limit normal snippets. Most sites are better off aiming to be cited.
- Do AI Overviews cite small sites?
- Yes, when a small site states the answer clearly and ranks for the query. Clarity and accuracy matter more than size.
