ai.txt and robots.txt
ai.txt is a proposal from Spawning: a robots.txt-style file at /ai.txt that states which file types on your site may be used to train AI. Some dataset tools honour it; it is not a standard every company follows.
robots.txt rules for specific AI crawlers (GPTBot, ClaudeBot, Google-Extended, CCBot) are more widely respected, so the generator gives you both.
Questions
Is ai.txt legally binding?
No. It states your preference; whether a company honours it is up to them.
Will this remove me from AI search?
Not if you keep search crawlers like OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot allowed. The generator separates training from search.
Where do I put ai.txt?
At the root: yoursite.com/ai.txt.
Is this the same as llms.txt?
No. llms.txt helps AI tools read your site; ai.txt sets training permissions.
