The Discord message limit

A Discord message can be up to 2,000 characters for most users; Nitro subscribers can send up to 4,000. Markdown formatting such as bold and code blocks counts toward the limit.

How to write a Discord message

Community servers usually have a channel for sharing projects, so post there rather than in general chat. A short message with one clear question gets more replies than a full announcement.

Questions

What is the Discord message character limit?

2,000 characters. Nitro raises it to 4,000.

Does markdown count toward the Discord limit?

Yes. The asterisks, backticks and other formatting characters count.

What happens if my Discord message is too long?

Discord offers to send it as a text file attachment instead.

Do spaces and emoji count?

Spaces and punctuation count as one character each. This checker counts each visible character once, so an emoji counts as one.

Is my text stored or sent anywhere?

No. The counting happens in your browser and nothing is uploaded.
